Characterization of Flavor and Aroma Analytes in Tobacco
Reference Number: lpss-129
Overview
Identifying unknown analytes in complex samples remains a significant challenge in non-targeted analysis, often relying heavily on manual expert interpretation. To address this, researchers are leveraging the Multi-Mode Ion Source, which allows for the generation of Electron Ionization, Positive Chemical Ionization, and Negative Chemical Ionization spectra without hardware changes. By combining the structural fragmentation patterns of Electron Ionization with the molecular ion preservation of Positive Chemical Ionization and the class-specific sensitivity of Negative Chemical Ionization, this workflow aims to automate peak alignment and molecular weight prediction. Utilizing high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry, this integrated approach provides the mass accuracy and spectral detail necessary to transition from manual data review to robust, automated solutions for more reliable library matching and the characterization of true unknowns in complex matrices like detergent fragrances.
