Lanzado en marzo de 1996, el Pegasus fue m\u00e1s que un simple instrumento nuevo; fue un salto tecnol\u00f3gico que aport\u00f3 una velocidad y claridad sin precedentes a los an\u00e1lisis qu\u00edmicos complejos. Para conmemorar las tres d\u00e9cadas de esta plataforma l\u00edder en la industria, les pedimos a quienes estuvieron presentes desde el principio que compartieran su historia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-h2-style\">Reflexiones de Slava Artaev<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">30 a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hace treinta a\u00f1os, el 3 de marzo de 1996, nos paramos en un abarrotado sal\u00f3n de exposiciones en Pittcon, en Chicago, y encendimos algo que cre\u00edamos que pod\u00eda cambiar la qu\u00edmica anal\u00edtica. En ese momento, no se sent\u00eda hist\u00f3rico; se sent\u00eda fr\u00e1gil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solo unos pocos de nosotros entend\u00edamos lo delicado que era ese momento. Kevin McNitt y yo hab\u00edamos pasado a\u00f1os trabajando en ese instrumento: el primer espectr\u00f3metro de masas de tiempo de vuelo con cromatograf\u00eda de gases LECO Pegasus (GC-TOFMS). Para todos los dem\u00e1s, no era m\u00e1s que otro sistema nuevo en una feria comercial. Para nosotros y unos cuantos m\u00e1s, representaba a\u00f1os de experimentos, noches sin dormir y la convicci\u00f3n de que la espectrometr\u00eda de masas de tiempo de vuelo podr\u00eda finalmente revelar algo que la cromatograf\u00eda hab\u00eda estado esperando.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-h3-style\">El Comienzo<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La historia comenz\u00f3 en Okemos, M\u00edchigan, en una peque\u00f1a empresa emergente llamada Meridian Analytical Instruments. Los cient\u00edficos reconocieron el potencial de inmediato. De repente, las mezclas complejas pod\u00edan analizarse sin perder informaci\u00f3n de picos cromatogr\u00e1ficos muy estrechos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poco tiempo despu\u00e9s, LECO Corporation adquiri\u00f3 Meridian Analytical Instruments y nos invit\u00f3 a continuar el trabajo dentro de una organizaci\u00f3n mucho m\u00e1s grande. De repente, el reto cambi\u00f3. Ya no est\u00e1bamos construyendo prototipos. Ten\u00edamos que crear un instrumento totalmente comercial, y ten\u00edamos que hacerlo r\u00e1pidamente.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-h3-style\">El nombre de Pegasus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Todo instrumento, tarde o temprano, necesita un nombre. Durante esos primeros meses de desarrollo, habl\u00e1bamos a menudo de velocidad, potencia y la idea de capturar informaci\u00f3n que otros instrumentos no lograban captar. Alguien sugiri\u00f3 \u201cPegasus\u201d, el caballo alado de la mitolog\u00eda griega. No era simplemente otro espectr\u00f3metro de masas. La p\u00e1gina muestra los primeros resultados de la prueba de CG-EM-TTOF, registrados mientras verific\u00e1bamos que el sistema pod\u00eda capturar picos cromatogr\u00e1ficos extremadamente r\u00e1pidos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En ese momento era simplemente documentaci\u00f3n, otra p\u00e1gina en una larga serie de experimentos. Mirando hacia atr\u00e1s ahora, esa p\u00e1gina amarilla se siente como un peque\u00f1o artefacto hist\u00f3rico. Registra el momento en que nos dimos cuenta de que el instrumento finalmente estaba funcionando de la manera que hab\u00edamos esperado.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-h3-style\">Chicago, marzo de 1996<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cuando el equipo Pegasus lleg\u00f3 a la feria Pittcon en Chicago, solo cont\u00e1bamos con un breve margen de tiempo para instalarlo y probarlo. Nuestro \u00fanico d\u00eda libre result\u00f3 ser fundamental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cuando encendimos el instrumento por primera vez en la sala de exposiciones, no pas\u00f3 nada. El problema result\u00f3 ser el\u00e9ctrico. La alimentaci\u00f3n el\u00e9ctrica disponible en la sala era diferente a la que necesitaba el instrumento. Pasaron horas mientras revis\u00e1bamos los cables, ajust\u00e1bamos las conexiones e intent\u00e1bamos estabilizar los componentes electr\u00f3nicos. Finalmente, el sistema cobr\u00f3 vida. Para la ma\u00f1ana del 3 de marzo de 1996, el Pegasus estaba listo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Una de las demostraciones que mostramos involucr\u00f3 separaciones r\u00e1pidas por cromatograf\u00eda de gases (GC) de compuestos clorados, revelando c\u00f3mo el sistema pod\u00eda registrar espectros completos a trav\u00e9s de picos de apenas fracciones de segundo de ancho. Para muchos cient\u00edficos que observaban la pantalla ese d\u00eda, las implicaciones eran obvias. Este instrumento pod\u00eda capturar informaci\u00f3n que antes desaparec\u00eda.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-h3-style\">Cuando los datos hablan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lo que recuerdo con mayor claridad de esa semana no es el estr\u00e9s de construir el instrumento, sino las reacciones de los cient\u00edficos que lo vieron en funcionamiento. La gente se reun\u00eda alrededor del stand a medida que aparec\u00edan los espectros en la pantalla. Algunos hac\u00edan preguntas t\u00e9cnicas. Otros simplemente observaban. Muchos se dieron cuenta r\u00e1pidamente de lo que esto significaba para su trabajo. Mezclas complejas, muestras ambientales, productos petroqu\u00edmicos, aromas y sabores: ahora todos ellos pod\u00edan estudiarse con mucha mayor claridad. El Pegasus no solo generaba datos m\u00e1s r\u00e1pidamente, sino que permit\u00eda a los qu\u00edmicos ver mejor lo que realmente hab\u00eda presente en sus muestras.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-h3-style\">Despu\u00e9s de Pittcon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El trabajo continu\u00f3 a buen ritmo despu\u00e9s de la exposici\u00f3n.
