This webinar, presented by Lena DuBois, explores how combining comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC) with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS) and advanced data processing tools can enhance analytical laboratory workflows. The discussion emphasizes the importance of integrating both hardware and software to turn complex sample data into meaningful insights. The presentation explains how GCxGC improves separation compared to traditional one-dimensional GC by using two columns with different selectivities, producing detailed contour plots that reveal chemical groupings and trace components. Coupled with TOF-MS, this approach enables full mass range acquisition and reliable compound identification using spectral libraries. The software workflow further enhances interpretation by segmenting chromatographic data into retention time windows and applying statistical tools like Fisher ratio analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) to identify key differentiators between sample groups.
Three application examples demonstrate the practical value of this workflow: aroma profiling and classification of baijiu, analysis of recipe-driven differences in pumpernickel bread, and authentication of white asparagus based on geographic origin. Across these case studies, GCxGC-TOF-MS reveals subtle chemical differences that would be difficult to detect otherwise, enabling both non-targeted discovery and targeted analysis development.
