Non-Targeted Analysis of Household and Office Dust using GCxGC-HRTOFMS

Dust is highlighted as a complex and important sample matrix because it acts as a repository for a wide range of chemicals—including persistent organic pollutants (POPs), pesticides, flame retardants, pharmaceuticals, and everyday consumer product residues. Because humans spend significant time indoors, analyzing dust can provide valuable insight into potential exposure to environmental contaminants.
To address the complexity of dust, the webinar demonstrates how GCxGC-HRTOF-MS enables enhanced separation, detection, and identification of diverse compounds across wide concentration ranges. The dual-column GCxGC setup significantly improves chromatographic resolution, while high-resolution mass spectrometry allows accurate mass measurement and confident compound identification. Combined with multimode ionization (electron ionization, positive and negative chemical ionization), this approach enables more complete characterization of challenging analytes—including pesticides, flame retardants, and fluorinated compounds—by providing complementary spectral information and improved library matching.
The workflow extends beyond initial screening to include retrospective data analysis and quantitative methods, maximizing the value of collected data. Tools such as mass defect plots and target analyte finding allow researchers to revisit datasets and identify additional compounds post-analysis, including specific pollutant classes like PCBs and halogenated compounds. Quantitative analysis is demonstrated through the measurement of chlorinated paraffins using cloud-based grouping approaches, enabling accurate reporting of contaminant levels. Overall, the webinar shows how combining high-resolution instrumentation with advanced data processing supports comprehensive environmental screening, exposure assessment, and contaminant quantification in complex matrices like dust.
When you don’t know what you’re looking for, as is often the case with environmental contaminants and pollutants, the task can seem daunting, but high-resolution TOFMS and GCxGC is a powerful combination for non-target searches.
